What is ESY?
Extended School Year (ESY) provides special education services during the summer for students who require continued support based on their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
How is Attendance Tracked?
During ESY, student attendance is recorded daily. Those attendance days are then combined across all students for funding calculations.
What Drives Funding?
ESY funding is based on total attendance days converted into annualized ADA. It is not based on whether the ESY calendar is 18 days, 19 days, or 20 days.
How Do We Get Total Attendance Days?
Total Attendance Days comes from adding together each student's daily attendance during the ESY program. Each day a student is present counts as 1 attendance day.
| Student | Days Attended |
|---|---|
| Student A | 18 |
| Student B | 15 |
| Student C | 12 |
18 + 15 + 12 = 45 Total Attendance Days
How the State Calculates ESY ADA
The State converts summer attendance into a full school year equivalent using the following formula:
Total Days Attended ÷ 175 = ESY ADA
The 175-day divisor represents the number of instructional days in a full school year.
Simple Example
If all ESY students combined attend 216 total days:
216 ÷ 175 = 1.23 ADA
The 1.23 ADA is the number used for funding purposes.

Important Clarification
- The number of ESY days offered helps explain participation.
- The number of ESY days offered does not determine funding.
- Funding is based on total attendance days divided by 175.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does offering more ESY days increase funding?
Only if students attend more days. Funding is based on attendance, not just days offered.
Does a student attending all summer equal 1 ADA?
No. Even full attendance during ESY is divided by 175, so it results in a fraction of ADA.
Why does ESY funding seem lower than expected?
Because ESY is a short-term program and the State annualizes attendance over a full 175-day school year.
What are ESY days used for?
They are used to understand participation, but not to calculate funding.
